140%的空头股票哪里来的？
与国内的A股不同的是，美股是可以双向交易的，这意味着投资者尽管手中没有股票，也可以卖出股票，那么空头的赚钱方式是，借入股票并卖出股票，在股价下跌交割时买入股票平仓，从而获利。
通常来说，做空是没有问题的，但是在GME这些股票身上发生了什么？对冲基金等机构认为GME这些股票价格会下跌，因此疯狂做空这些股票，甚至原本市场上只有100%的流通股，对冲机构却通过借入股票卖出这些股票以及通过卖出看涨期权做空这些股票，这导致GME原本只有100%的流通股，但是市场上的却拥有140%的卖空股票。
而华尔街的金融巨鳄们也一直通过这种方式获利颇丰。
140%的空头股票会发生什么？
当市场上出现140%的空头股票时，实际上就出现问题，只要多头不断的买入股票，股票价格一直上涨，那么，空头为了能够在交割时获得应交的数量，最终只能在价格上屈服于多头要求，忍痛买入平仓。
以GME为例，在140%的流通股被做空的情况下，当股价从上周的几十块钱涨到现在的几百块钱的时候，市场上的做市商就应该开始恐慌，不仅需要购买GME 的股票来填补对冲基金做空的股票，还需要购买足够的股票防止他们做空的看涨期权出现爆仓，通过这种方式来保护自己。
但是一旦发生这种情况，就出现了人踩人的“逼空”现象，一方面散户里的人不买，并且疯狂的买入，让市场上没有流动性；而另外一方面，原本做空的对冲基金也必须不停的买入股票来对冲，但是现在你再怎么买也不能买入超过市场存有的流通股票。
目前市场上流通的股票为100%，但是做空机构卖出140%，平仓的时候需要买入140%的股票，那么为了不爆仓就需要不停的购买股票，但是你再怎么买也无法买到超过市场本身的40%的股票，不停的上涨，不停的爆仓。
而在GameStop Corp的效应发生之后，多个在线交易平台限制购买该股票和其他多只类似股票，一些用户发起诉讼。而部分民主党和共和党议员也批评不应该对散户投资者施加交易限制。而在当地时间周三下午Discord宣布封禁r/WallStreeBets服务器，原因是曾多次违反该平台反仇恨言论政策，而在此前的几天时间内，散户投资者们通过在r/WallStreeBets发声来聚合散户的力量。
白宫也关注到GameStop Corp效应的情况，发言人在新闻发布会上表示：“我们的团队、经济团队、包括财政部长耶伦和其他人，正在对这一情况进行监测。这是一个好的提醒，但是股市并非是衡量经济健康状况的唯一指标。它不能反映中产阶级和工薪阶层家庭的情况。”
