在印度北部城市古尔冈的一家医院里，患者家属猛敲重症监护室的门。而当他们推门进入后，眼前的一幕让他们惊呆了：医生不见踪影，只有患者躺在病床上。
医院里没有医生，也没有警卫。一位患者家属冲着警察大声喊道：医生怎么能丢下病人跑了呢，这是犯罪，怎么能丢下他们呢。
院方称，当天医院的氧气即将耗尽，他们向政府请求帮助，并通知了患者家属。当天，有6名患者死亡。随后，医生离开了病房。
院方表示，在氧气耗尽无力救治患者的情况下，不得已安排医生们藏了起来。因为在此前的几天里，至少发生了两起新冠肺炎死亡患者家属袭击医护人员的事件。

疫情冲击之下，印度各地医院不堪重负。在新德里的圣家医院，年轻医生阿加瓦尔一次轮班达到将近30小时，包括在急诊室里值夜班。
阿加瓦尔原本明年才要从医学院毕业，然而由于疫情肆虐，26岁的他不得不提前走上岗位。圣家医院是印度最好的医院之一，但与其他医院一样，病床、呼吸机和医用氧气都不够用。医疗资源的有限，让在急诊室值班的阿加瓦尔被迫决定哪些患者能入院治疗。

此外，当地时间5月8日，位于印度南部安得拉邦的一个医疗中心门口聚集了上百人。据当地媒体报道，当天只安排了300人进行新冠疫苗接种，但现场却聚集了600多民众，当地不得不出动警力疏散现场群众并维持秩序。由于当地警力不足，场面一度失控。
